Now open, the Robert and Ronnie Bretholtz Center for Patients and Families at BWH offers a variety of services, mixing comfort and technology. The Center is designed to add convenience, ease stress and improve the overall hospital experience for patients and their families. Under the auspices of Nancy Kruger, DNSc, RN, vice president of Patient Care Services, the Center greets visitors as they walk through the 75 Francis Street entrance and it encompasses Patient/Family Relations, Family Liaison Services, Patient Access Services, Chaplaincy and the newly created the Michele and Howard Kessler Health Education Library.
“The Bretholtz Center speaks to the very essence of BWH’s mission to deliver the highest quality of patient care,” said Kruger.
According to Christine Collins, director of Patient Access Services at BWH, after being admitted, many patients waiting for surgery or other procedures, as well as their families, will find a gracious staff and a comfortable waiting area. Private areas are also available to meet with caregivers, chaplains, or other support staff. Nearby, the Kessler Library will provide helpful health information and internet connections for further health research.
“The Center provides the tools necessary to enhance communication between caregivers and patients and their families. All the services signify our commitment to helping guide patients through their care,” said Janet Korman-Parra, acting director, Patient/ Family Relations. A center of this nature has been a goal of the hospital, particularly of its late chairman of the Board of Trustees, Robert Bretholtz, who passed away in 1999 after a battle with cancer. Bretholtz’s dedication to improving service to patients and families made a profound impact on the hospital.
The Center’s construction was made possible by $3 million of generous contributions to the hospital, including a gift from the Bretholtz family.
