Top Ten Keys to JCAHO Success
What every nurse can do to prepare for the survey
As the January 22, 2001 start date nears for the JCAHO survey,
the following will serve as helpful reminders:
• Know the mission, vision and values of BWH
• Demonstrate your professionalism:
• confirm documentation of current licensure
• complete mandatory inservices—abuse training, infection control, etc.
• obtain TB screening
• document continuing education
• confirm annual performance evaluation is complete
• Ask your patients about their preferences regarding advanced directives
• For your safety:
• • avoid clutter—keep hallways and fire doors clear
• • do not bring or leave food or drink in patient care areas
• Assess your patient for learning needs and preferences
• Maintain medication security—keep all cabinets & refrigerators locked
• Assess and manage your patient’s pain
• Always “comment” on PCx monitoring results when less than 50 or greater than 300
• Document temperature, defibrillator and code cart checks
• Wear your hospital ID
If you would like more information on the above reminders, read Finishing Touches, 3rd Edition, ask your nurse manager or read the regular “Ask Yourself” articles in BWH Bulletin. Another
