The outcome identified in the development and implementation of a novice nurse program is to assure a highly trained and competent nursing staff where cutting edge technology, medications and approaches are the standard. Through didactic sessions, extensive case review, extended clinical preceptorship and a socialization program, the novice nurse program provides the newly licensed nurse with opportunities to develop critical thinking skills, technological expertise and staff-supported socialization to the hospital. The program was created to provide a structured yet adaptable approach to the unique needs of the novice nurse. The outcome of this program is the development of a competent and confident professional nurse capable of assuming patient care assignments of growing complexity—one who demonstrates caring relationships with patients and families, functions as a member of the interdisciplinary team, demonstrates critical thinking and technical skills, and seeks necessary resources and assistance as necessary.
