Three Nurses Receive Nancy King McDermott Scholarships
Three BWH nurses were awarded academic scholarships supported by the family of Nancy King McDermott, who worked at BWH for 39 years before she passed away in 2000.
Ms. King McDermott was a Peter Bent Brigham graduate who then received her master’s degree in nursing administration from Northeastern University. As a nursing administrator, she was committed to providing opportunities for nurses to receive higher education. Her family established this fund in her honor to provide financial assistance for nurses pursuing further education. This year’s scholarship recipients are Beth Baldwin, Gail Gregg and Lisa Preston.
Beth Baldwin, BSN, RN, is a patient and family educator in the Center for Nursing Excellence. She led an initiative to use interactive video technology to improve patient education and nursing documentation. She is pursuing a master’s degree in nursing leadership/health administration at Regis College.
Gail Gregg, MSN, RN, has been a staff nurse in the Surgical Intensive Care Unit on Tower 8D for the past eleven years. She played a pivotal role in conducting a pilot research study around glycemic control practices in the ICU that contributed significantly to advancing the care and outcomes of post-operative patients. Gregg completed her master’s degree in gerontological nursing in May at the University of Massachusetts at Lowell.
Lisa Preston, BSN, RN, is the nurse educator for medical cardiology nursing staff on Shapiro 9/10 and has served in a number of roles at BWH since 1994. She is also the co-facilitator of the BWH-End of Life Nursing Education Consortium and has been active in the development of nurse educators in supporting the role of the preceptor. She is pursuing a master’s degree in nursing leadership and management at George Washington University in Washington, D.C.
