Leone Named MICU Nurse Manager
Kathleen Leone, BSN, MBA, RN, in October was named nurse manager of the MICU, the 20-bed unit where she served as a staff nurse for the last 12 years.
“I feel very supported by nursing leadership and staff, most of whom I’ve worked with for many years,” said Leone, who began at BWH in 1986. “I’m grateful to be part of a strong, reliable team in the MICU, and I look forward to contributing to the growth and professional development of the staff.”
As nurse manager, Leone provides the leadership for 110 nurses, 12 patient care assistants and eight unit coordinators who work together to care for critically ill patients, many of whom have multi-system organ failure. “Often, one patient has consults from many areas, so our staff need to be well-rounded in their skill and care,” Leone said.
MICU nurses are preparing to take on another role: the code team. When the cardiovascular group moves to the Shapiro Center in the spring, MICU nurses will be responsible for responding to codes in the Tower. “We’re aiming to have everyone ACLS-certified and trained before March,” Leone said.
Since joining BWH, Leone has embraced many challenges. As a research nurse, she was part of groundbreaking work in the Venous Thromboembolism Research Unit. She set up a research nurse position in the Division of Gastroenterology, working on 14 different protocols before joining the Multiple Sclerosis Clinic to manage outpatients and research.
Leone graduated from the Evanston Hospital School of Nursing, earned her BSN from Northwestern University and then received her MBA with a concentration in Health Care Finance from Boston University.
