Hematology Research Director, H. Franklin Bunn, MD, was awarded the Henry M. Stratton Medal from the American Society of Hematology for his contributions to research and education. During his career, Bunn's scope of research has developed from the structure and function of hemoglobin to the regulation of red blood cell production by erythropoietin.
Kathleen Gordon recently began as the new director of Patient and Family Relations. She responds to complaints and compliments, and facilitates interdepartmental relations. Gordon hopes to raise the awareness among patients, families and staff that this service exists to address concerns and offer service amenities to support the hospital’s mission to deliver the highest quality of patient care.
A BWH employee since 1998, Nancy Masaschi was recently named as the director of Value Analysis. Formerly a senior associate in Quality Management, Masaschi now acts as a liaison to the University Health System Consortium and works to streamline supplies and processes to make BWH more efficient. Through in-depth analysis, Masaschi hopes to identify opportunities for cost savings related to improved product, service and process standardization.
On March 1, Elliott M. Antman, MD, Cardiovascular Division, and Joanne S. Ingwall, PhD, Research, received the HMS-sponsored 2000 A. Clifford Barger Excellence in Mentoring Award. Antman and Ingwall were nominated by faculty members, house officers, fellows and students, and honored for encouraging themselves and others to develop their professional and personal lives.
David Acker, MD, has received a grant from CIMIT to learn how to perform laser coagulation of intra-uterine, inter-placental blood vessels in cases of severe twin-twin transfusion syndrome. This procedure will reestablish normal blood flow to each twin, by stopping blood flow from twin to twin, which can be fatal.
