In Memoriam
Dr. Edmund "Ned" Cabot
BWH mourns the loss of Dr. Edmund "Ned" Cabot, a Brigham surgeon of more than 25 years, who died earlier this month. Dr. Cabot was washed overboard and drowned off the coast of Newfoundland when a rogue wave overtook his yacht. He was traveling on the last leg of a journey that he and his friends had been making for the past seven summers, which brought them from Nova Scotia to Greenland, Iceland, Scotland and the coast of Norway. The others on the yacht survived.
Dr. Cabot, who also taught at Harvard Medical School, retired 10 years ago. He was a lifelong sailor, and he devoted his retirement to sailing and philanthropy. In a statement released by his family, Dr. Cabot's wife, Betsy Washburn Cabot, spoke of his love for adventure and his eagerness to share his interests with others. "He was good at everything he did, and a great teacher," she said. "You couldn't get out of an invitation by claiming you didn't know how to do it, because he would teach you how."
Andy Whittemore, MD, chief medical officer emeritus and former chief of vascular surgery, has known Dr. Cabot since early childhood. Whittemore described him as passionate about all things maritime, as evidenced by not only his own offshore voyages, but also by his deep commitment to the Sea Education Association in Woods Hole among other maritime related philanthropic initiatives. He went on to say that Dr. Cabot was a deeply compassionate soul, devoted to his family, and all of his many commitments.
