Milligan Receives First Lown Award for Excellence in Teaching
BWH neurologist Tracey Milligan, MD, received the first ever Bernard Lown Award for Excellence in Teaching at BWH. Highly regarded as a teacher and lecturer and often praised for her brilliance and interactive and approachable style, Milligan received the award at a May 10 ceremony at HMS.
“Dr. Milligan is always generous with her time, and she is willing to provide career advice and personal support for students and residents during the demanding stages of training,” said Joel Katz, MD, vice chair of Medical Education in the Department of Medicine, who chaired the Lown Award selection committee.
Named for Bernard Lown, MD, senior BWH physician, professor of Cardiology Emeritus at HSPH and the founder of the Lown Cardiovascular Center and Lown Cardiovascular Research Foundation, this award was established this year by BWH President Elizabeth Nabel, MD, to celebrate physicians who are outstanding clinical teachers.
In naming Milligan as the first recipient of this award, the committee found a deserving recipient. She attended Albert Einstein College of Medicine and joined the Neurology residency program at BWH, where she distinguished herself as a superb clinician and team member. During residency, she began teaching at HMS in the Neuroanatomy Lab of the Human Nervous System and Behavior Course and the Neuroanatomy portion of the Patient Doctor II course. Milligan completed a fellowship in epilepsy and EEG under the late Edward Bromfield, MD.
Since joining the Neurology faculty at BWH, Milligan has assumed various teaching roles and quickly taken on leadership roles in education. In 2005, she became the associate clerkship director and then was named clerkship director. In 2007, she became a BWH Principle Clinical Experience (PCE) advisor for several students and meets regularly with them through their third year. Also, she is BWH director of the Patient Doctor II course and developed an innovative curriculum called the Integrative Mind-Brain Medicine Course for all third-year medical students at BWH. In 2008, she was named the associate director of the BWH Neurology residency program.
