Collaborations for a Cure Symposium
BWH’s first annual Collaborations for a Cure Symposium was a success, drawing donor support for cancer research and surgery at BWH, while also educating those in attendance about cancer efforts at the hospital.
The event kicked off with welcoming remarks from Michael Zinner, MD, chief of Surgery, who expressed his gratitude for the collaborative nature of both the clinical care efforts and research work being done at BWH. In addition, he spoke about the cancer renovation project that will include private rooms and 30 additional beds as well as the expansion of BWH’s cancer program with centers in Milford and on the South Shore.
The symposium’s panel included keynote speakers Biomedical Research Institute Director Cynthia Morton, PhD, and Women’s and Perinatal Pathology Director Christopher Crum, MD.
Morton, whose efforts on the prediction and prevention of diseases and personalized medicine through an understanding of genes, spoke to the audience about the BRI and how cancer efforts at BWH are changing medicine, while Crum, who discussed his research into the origins of ovarian cancer, shared how he and his colleagues developed new lines of inquiry into cancer. In addition, he shared new therapies and approaches to treating gynecologic cancers.
In addition to the keynote speakers, guests attended sessions focused on brain cancer, breast cancer, colon cancer, gynecologic oncology, melanoma, prostate cancer and thoracic cancer. These sessions consisted of panels featuring three or more physicians with expertise in particular areas of cancer. This format was used as a tool to further highlight BWH’s outstanding efforts in cancer care and research.
