Medical Staff Roles During a Disaster
To provide safe and effective patient care, all medical staff, including licensed independent practitioners at Brigham and Women's Hospital, should be aware of their roles if there is notification of a disaster. If you are in the hospital when a Code Amber (Disaster) is announced, you should report to or call into your division or departmental director for instructions. He or she will act as the disaster team coordinator for each service within the hospital. You may be assigned to the personnel labor pool for a role within the hospital based on the needs of the incident.
All medical staff should be familiar with the hospital's emergency operations plan which is part of the Crisis Resource Manual. It is distributed in print to each department and accessible on the hospital intranet site, BWHPikeNotes.org in the Policies section at www.bwhpikenotes.org/policies/CrisisResourceManual/
The hospital also has an Employee Emergency Announcement Line: 1-800-343-7036 to hear important announcements and updates. On the back of your hospital identification card is some basic information to use during an emergency response.
