Second Leadership Program Underway
Participants in the second cohort of the Brigham Leadership Program, the customized leadership training program developed by the Physicians’ Council and the Center for Faculty Development and Diversity (CFDD) in partnership with the Harvard Business School, in December announced nine strategic projects which will draw their focus for the next several months. The program was renamed the Brigham Leadership Program to reflect the expansion to include nursing directors in the second cohort.
Meanwhile, as the 57 participants in the second cohort are about half-way through the 10-month program, nearly all the participants from the inaugural group of physician and scientist leaders remain engaged in alumni activities.
“The Physician Leadership Program was an energizing experience that connected us to many colleagues outside our own departments, and the separation from our daily work enabled us to get to know one another better with a true sense of camaraderie,” said Bhavani Kodali, MD, clinical director in Anesthesiology, Perioperative and Pain Medicine, who completed the first cohort of the program. “After the course, I have certainly changed my attitude in the way I approach day-to-day management work. Moreover, it certainly has become easier to discuss issues and problems with colleagues who have also taken the course and to craft out plans to improve organizational work and efficiency.”
The CFDD and the Physicians’ Council created this intensive academic program for mid-career faculty already in, or aspiring to, leadership positions at BWH. The curriculum, which includes Brigham-based case studies taught in a business school model, is developed jointly by HBS faculty and BWH faculty and leadership. The program offers in-depth course work on hospital leadership taught from financial, operations, human resources and strategic perspectives, and participants work in teams to complete a strategic leadership project.
Course directors are: Barbara Bierer, MD, senior vice president of research and director of the CFDD; Allen Smith, MD, MS, president of the BWPO; Andy Whittemore, MD, chief medical officer and co-director of the CFDD; Jessica Dudley, MD, chief medical officer of the PO; Mitchel B. Harris, MD, chief of Trauma in Orthopedics, and chair of the Physicians’ Council leadership subcommittee; and Audrey Haas, CFDD executive director.
