Screensavers Tout High Performance Medicine
High Performance Medicine at Partners HealthCare took on a new look in May. Throughout the organization, computer screens are sporting new attention-grabbing screensavers that carry key messages about High Performance Medicine (HPM), system-wide initiatives designed to improve the quality, safety and efficiency of patient care.
During the past year, Partners has been communicating information about HPM to physicians via direct communication from the physician organizations, the Web, direct mail newsletters, hospital posters, the annual report, some paid advertising and computer screensavers. A recent on-line Partners-wide physician survey revealed that communications about High Performance Medicine have been largely successful. More than half of Partners physicians have heard of HPM, and virtually all are aware of at least one of its initiatives. Nine out of 10 Partners physicians were familiar with computerized physician order entry (CPOE) and the electronic medical record (EMR). This level of awareness is system-wide, across all four hospitals and all demographic subgroups.
One of the most surprising survey findings is that physicians are most likely to have learned about HPM through the screensavers. “Physicians are constantly bombarded with information, and finding a way to ‘break through’ is a big challenge. The screensavers, developed by Cindy Bero in Partners IS, really succeeded in getting people’s attention,” said Tom Glynn, Partners COO. “The challenge now is keeping the message fresh before it turns into wallpaper that no one notices anymore.”
