Joseph Loscalzo, MD, PhD, was appointed BWH's next Physician- in-Chief and chair of the Department of Medicine. Loscalzo is the Wade Professor and chairman of the Department of Medicine, Professor of Biochemistry, and director of the Whitaker Cardiovascular Institute at Boston University School of Medicine, as well as Physician-in-Chief at Boston Medical Center.
Marc Pfeffer, MD, PhD, will continue as the interim chair until Loscalzo joins BWH July 1.
“We look forward to Dr. Loscalzo's expertise and talents at the helm of Medicine at BWH as he shares our vision and embraces our mission,” said Gary L. Gottlieb, MD, MBA, president. “His leadership in clinical care, renowned research and enthusiasm for teaching the next generation of medical leaders are welcome additions to our existing strengths.”
No stranger to BWH or Harvard Medical School (HMS), Loscalzo completed his clinical training and served as resident and chief resident in Medicine and as a fellow in Cardiology at BWH. He became a staff cardiologist in 1984 and remained at BWH until 1993.
Over the last two decades, Loscalzo has been the recipient of many NIH grants for his research in the areas of vascular biology, thrombosis, and atherosclerosis. He now serves as principal investigator of four NIH grants including a Specialized Center of Research (SCOR) Grant in Ischemic Heart Disease.
Loscalzo served for nine years as associate editor of the prestigious New England Journal of Medicine and currently holds the title of editor-in-chief of Circulation.
“The Department of Medicine has much to gain from Dr. Loscalzo's arrival. He is an extraordinary physician, scientist and educator. His enormous strengths in bringing together multidisciplinary teams to advance science and care delivery will be an important asset as BWH weathers the health care climate in years to come,” said Eugene Braunwald, MD, who served as the chairman of the Department of Medicine from 1972 to 1996 and currently serves as the chairman of the TIMI study group at BWH and Distinguished Hersey Professor of Medicine at HMS.
