Code Team Updates
Beginning in June, Code Team training, employing human patient simulations that had previously been provided at CMS in Cambridge, will be integrated into the newly established STRATUS Center for Medical Simulation within the Department of Emergency Medicine at the Neville House. It is anticipated that this new location will facilitate easier access for Code Team members, enhancing attendance. According to Charles Pozner, MD, director of EMS and STRATUS, simulations will take place twice each month.
On-site Mock Codes, another important component of the hospital’s commitment to quality care, will also take place twice each month, on all shifts. Mock Codes allow Code Team members to practice responding to medical emergencies, while enabling the CPR committee to continuously monitor the processes, allowing necessary system modifications to be made on an ongoing basis.
“Dr. Pozner’s enthusiasm and leadership in this area of simulation have been invaluable to the BWH efforts to develop and refine a designated Code Team. In addition, Dr. Jeffrey Rothschild has been leading the Code Team initiative for many years and has dramatically improved the conduct of codes at the hospital,” added Peter Stone, MD, BWH Cardiovascular Division, explaining that under Rothschild’s leadership BWH now tracks metrics for code performance, compares BWH outcomes with those of other hospitals nationwide, and identifies areas for specific improvement.
