In keeping with its characteristic spirit of philanthropy, the BWH Development Office launched a new program this past holiday season to encourage staff members to give back to the Greater Boston community. Through the program, dubbed "Voluncheers," Development staff volunteered one morning last month at eight local nonprofits, including the Boys and Girls Clubs, Community Servings, Cradles to Crayons, East End House, Room to Grow and BWH itself, along with other organizations.
Chief Development Officer and Senior Vice President Jim Asp, who volunteered by scrubbing the counters, floors and walls of the Boys and Girls Club kitchen in Roxbury, says the program was inspired by "Life. Giving. Breakthroughs." campaign chair John Fish. "We dedicated these hours of service to John, who personifies the kind of leadership that builds a just and supportive community," said Asp.
"Voluncheers" also served to inspire a strong sense of teamwork, goodwill and holiday merriment among the 77 staff members who participated on Dec. 19. Following the volunteer activities in the morning, staff members gathered for a festive holiday luncheon, in which team leaders and participants recounted the highlights of the day.
"More than 220 volunteer hours were contributed to these important community organizations," Asp said. "It was a wonderful day."
