Are you ready for JCAHO?
At 2:22 p.m., four days shy of the new year, Meaza Tesfamicael and Hablemariam Teklay welcomed their third child, a healthy baby boy, into the world, not knowing right away that their son was the hospital’s 10,000th baby born in 2000. Equally surprised was Jill Donovan, RN, who recalled a very smooth delivery of little Adonay, weighing 9 lbs., 10 oz. “I didn’t realize I was taking part in the delivery of the 10,000th baby until after it was over,” she said. Although it is not unprecedented, delivering 10,000 babies in one year is quite an accomplishment for BWH. With births surpassing 10,000 in 1987-1990, and now in 2000, Obstetrics continues to be the cornerstone of the hospital’s renowned success in Women’s Health. As the largest birthing center in New England, BWH has consistently totaled 9,000 births or more in recent years. “This is not a coincidence,” said Mairead Hickey, PhD, RN, vice president, Women’s Health and Specialty Services at BWH. “Our patients’ strong desire to deliver at BWH speaks to the hospital’s long history of expert care in Women’s Health, which stems from one of our founding institutions—the Boston Lying-in Hospital.” “To invariably match this volume with top quality obstetrical care is remarkable,” said Robert Barbieri, MD, chair, Obstetrics/Gynecology. “I applaud the extraordinary commitment and effort of our highly dedicated and experienced nurses, physicians, support staff and administrators who deliver nearly 200 babies each week.”
