Actress Loni Anderson recently visited patients at BWH, who are afflicted with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), the fourth leading cause of death in the United States. Working with the National Lung Health Education Program, Anderson is leading a nationwide awareness campaign for the disease that results in chronic bronchitis and emphysema primarily from smoking. Anderson, whose parents both suffered from COPD and eventually died from illnesses related to the disease, shared her personal perspective with the weekly support group of local COPD patients held at the hospital. John Reilly, MD, clinical director, BWH Pulmonary Division, accompanied Anderson.
