As clocks across the world race toward their uppermost positions on New Year’s Eve, BWH managers will be on site to ensure hospital operations will go on uninterrupted. Based in the Duncan Reid Conference Room, BWH will establish a Y2K Command Center to coordinate a wide array of critical functions. “While we maintain strong confidence in our preparedness for this once in a lifetime event, we will be ready to address any number of issues that may arise that night,” said BWH Chief Operating Officer Matt Van Vranken, who will guide the hospital’s efforts that night. The hospital has outlined important information for employees who will be staffing operations over the holiday weekend. Y2K at BWH: What you need to know Security • Use the 75 Francis Street entrance after 8 p.m. • Wear your ID badge. • Family members and friends of BWH employees will not be allowed in the hospital after 8 p.m. • No alcoholic beverages may be brought in or consumed on hospital premises. Transportation • The MBTA will be offering free service from 6 a.m. on December 31 through 6 a.m. • BWH Security Shuttle Service buses will operate. • Employees with an ID badge can park for free the Mission Park Garage from 7 a.m. on December 31 through 7 a.m. on January 3. Information Systems • Turn off your computer before leaving for New Year’s weekend. • There will be no internet service from 11 p.m. on December 31 through 1 a.m. on January 1. Communications • In order to avoid network telephone problems, employees are asked to refrain from checking voicemail and to limit calls where possible to patient care issues. • 100 two-way radios will be available in key patient care areas in the event of lost telecommunications. Emergency Department • ED Urgent Care will be open 24 hours from December 31 through January 4. • “Fast Track” areas will be open all night on New Year’s Eve, with double staff assigned during peak hours.
