Every year, BWH leaders present the Heritage Society Award to individuals whose extraordinary gifts of time, talent and financial support have significantly advanced the hospital’s mission. This year’s recipients—Bayard Henry and Eugene Braunwald, MD—were announced on November 1, following a reception and dinner at the Fairmont Copley Plaza Hotel.
More than 300 guests hosted by BWH President Jeffrey Otten and Board Chairman Michael Bell honored Henry and Braunwald. Henry served the hospital as a trustee for 23 years, first at the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital and then at BWH. He is a long-time supporter who has given generously to the Marshall Wolf, MD, Medical Education Fund and the Bretholtz Center for Patients and Families.
Braunwald, voted by past Nobel Prize winners in medicine as “the person who has contributed the most to cardiology in recent years,” served as Chairman of the BWH Department of Medicine from 1972 to 1996 and oversaw dramatic growth in the hospital’s research effort. An architect of Partners HealthCare System, he now serves as its chief academic officer.
Bell expressed gratitude for the donors’ support, noting that BWH raised a record $31.2 million in fiscal year 2001. He also announced four recent gifts totaling $8.5 million, contributions that have helped the hospital reach $82.6 million toward the $200 million capital campaign goal. The campaign will be announced publicly in May.
