In response to this week’s national tragedy, BWH, other Partners hospitals, and healthcare organizations throughout Massachusetts stood ready to assist disaster victims in New York. Hundreds of people, including staff, employees, families, and members of the general public crowded the hospital’s blood donor center to provide assistance.
The response from our community was overwhelming," said Matt Van Vranken, chief operating officer, who directed the hospital’s response. "There was a remarkable outpouring of support and compassion. Our condolences are extended to those who may have lost friends or family to these tragic events."
In the wake of catastrophe, BWH cancelled inpatient elective procedures on Wednesday to conserve medical resources and the hospital’s Employee Assistance Program provided counseling to employees who may have been impacted by the tragedy.
Van Vranken said that although current demand has been met, there may be an ongoing need for blood donations in the weeks ahead. Those who are interested and capable of giving should contact the Blood Donor Center at 732-6620 to set up an appointment. EAP also continues to provide support and counselors are available by contacting the office at 732-6017.
