Before getting ready for the beginning of another school year, one group of students took the time to celebrate the completion of their summer education and employment program. On Wednesday, August 22, BWH staff and mentors honored the achievements of 14 Latino youths that participated in the Jovenes Latinos Pro Salud program (JLPS).
The JLPS program, co-sponsored by the Office of Jobs and Community Services, the City of Boston, and BWH, offers students the opportunity to explore the health care industry, develop valuable job skills, all while earning a summer income. Upon completion of the program, student interns are certified in CPR, JCAHO safety and basic computer education. Additionally, they receive more than 20 hours of life-skill training through classroom activities and by engaging in a cultural competency project, in which the interns work with supervisors to identify creative ways to link BWH to the Latino community.
The night featured guest speaker Cynthia Rodriguez, who shared her inspiring story of facing challenges and overcoming obstacles to achieve success as a writer with the Boston Globe. Cultural dances and music at the end of the evening livened up the festivities and reminded all involved that there was much to celebrate.
