How BWH Beat the Heat
A Refreshing Gesture
With temperatures soaring in the high nineties last week, BWH’s Engineering Department worked hard to keep things cool at 75 Francis Street. However, intense heat combined with surrounding power outages, created a larger challenge.
“Several days worth of nearly 100 degree temperatures combined with power outages put a definite strain on the electrical grid of the city, including the busy Longwood Medical Area,” said George Player, director, Department of Engineering at BWH.
According to Player, power outages affected a line of supplemental power to the AES power plant, which services the entire Longwood Medical Area. For this reason, BWH had to take precautions in reducing its energy consumption.
The hospital put its Utility Management Plan into action last Friday and Engineering’s electrical and HVAC teams worked to sustain temperatures and power in critical clinical and research areas, while they reduced power consumption in common and non-essential areas of the hospital.
“I applaud the engineers and all hospital staff whose energy conservation efforts substantially reduced the strain we put on our power sources,” said Player.
