BWH will conduct its second Staff Survey beginning September 4 and continuing throughout the month of September. The 2001 survey will be launched September 4 and will serve as a follow-up to BWH’s first ever Staff Survey in June 1999.
“By conducting regular staff surveys and providing employees a voice in the hospital’s decision making process, we hope to improve the working environment at BWH and the quality of care we provide to our patients,” said Cheryl Locke, vice president Human Resources, who has championed the hospital’s Staff Survey since her arrival at BWH in 1998.
“Employee and patient satisfaction go hand in hand at BWH and are two of the hospital’s highest priorities," added Matt Van Vranken, chief operating officer at BWH. "We strongly believe that satisfied and effective employees will enhance patient satisfaction.”
BWH and BWPO employees, physicians, volunteers and Partners employees who primarily support BWH are all invited to participate in the 2001 survey. The survey will be available in English, Spanish and French Creole, and this year, employees will also have the option of responding on-line.
Since BWH’s first survey, many improvements have been introduced to respond to the employee feedback, including an enhanced T-pass program, a Staff Guide to Safe and Healthy Work Environment and the employee referral bonus program. Over the past year, five Staff Survey Action Teams, with members from a broad range of departments, were formed to review data and propose improvement opportunities. These proposals are being implemented currently and are directed at the feedback from staff who took the 1999 staff survey.
The survey, which poses statements and seeks the level of agreement on behalf of the staff member, addresses overall staff satisfaction, with questions specific to the hospital’s mission, vision and values. There will also be open-ended questions, allowing for individual comments to be shared.
The survey is confidential and will take approximately 20 minutes to complete. Staff will be able to complete the survey on hospital time. Survey distribution plans are being developed and managers are encouraged to collaborate with their Human Resources generalist to identify an effective distribution plan.
Results from this year’s survey will be available and shared with the hospital community at the beginning of 2002.
