Prostate cancer is a complex disease, and choosing the appropriate course of treatment can be difficult. On June 26, BWH experts presented a comprehensive overview including detection staging, treatment, outcome assessment and current research to a large audience of more than 200 at BWH’s 3rd annual Symposium on Prostate Cancer. This year, Jerome Richie, MD (second from right) presented an overview of prostate cancer and addressed the benefits and potential side effects of surgery. In addition, advances continue to be made with magnetic resonance (MR) guide biopsy, MR spectroscopy and optical imaging. Clare Tempany, MD (second from left) explained how magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) takes images of the prostate and how tumors are identified and shaped. She also explained the MR Guided Brachytherapy Program at BWH. A long-term study conducted at BWH under the direction of Anthony D’Amico, MD, PhD (right) has for the first time shown that shorter clinical trials have been successful. A question and discussion session, moderated by Stuart Mushlin, MD (left) followed the presentations.
