Seven deserving nurses became the 2001 recipients of the first annual Medicine Housestaff Nursing Award at a celebratory reception and ceremony on June 8 in Carrie Hall. Several medical residents launched the new award to recognize the outstanding care and hard work of their nursing colleagues.
This award comes directly from the Medicine Housestaff in recognition of the vital role that nurses play in patient care, and the significant role that they play in our education and ability to care for patients. Nurses deserve daily recognition of the excellent work that they do,” said Amit Khera, MD, senior medical resident at BWH, who was pleased with the many nominations that resulted from the new recognition program.
Out of the 62 nominees, Emily Kramer Olson, 5B; Cindy Lemay, 9C; Carol Booth, 9C; Tom Sullivan, 12D; Suzanne Lieberman, 12D; Erika Liljegran, 14AB and 15C; and Diane Danno, VA Outpatient Clinic were selected to receive this year’s Medicine Housestaff Nursing Award. All seven nurses unknowingly arrived for the June 8 celebration and were surprised when their names were called as awardees.
“I think we all recognize that everyone at BWH works very hard to provide excellent care to our patients. But, no one has a greater impact on the patient’s experience than the nurse who provides day-to-day, hands-on care,” said Victor Dzau, MD, chair, Department of Medicine, whose remarks gave way to the presentations led by medical residents who each had special connections to the seven award recipients.
In addition to a framed certificate, the recipients each received a lapel pin with the award’s logo.
The committee organizing the award consisted of residents, chief residents and program directors, who received support from Dzau, Marshall Wolf, MD, nursing director Terry Kalhert, MS, RN and nurse managers Patti Rossi, RN, Mary Lou Moore, RN and Maureen Curley, RN.
