Kristin Ellison, MD, of the Cardiovascular Division knows the importance of exercise to heart health. She participates in aerobics, skiing and horseback riding when she’s not training for the Boston Marathon with Team Brigham. “Fitness is a great motivation and charity is a great end-point,” said Ellison, a two-time Team Brigham member. “The Fitcorp training is a great group atmosphere, especially with Linda Wernam’s leadership as she cheers for us every weekend.” Werman, Team Brigham director, encourages the team and passes out Gatorade at the weekend practice runs. She also coordinates a training schedule, plans events to prepare the team for the race and helps with fundraising. As of March 24, the team has raised over $100,000 of their $375,000 goal. The 62 Team Brigham members involved in the Fitcorp Training have been running on weekends and weekdays, cross-training with weights and swimming since early December. “The 2001 team is amazing,” Werman said. “They are training incredibly hard and doing an outstanding job towards fundraising.” As a member of Team Brigham, Ellison is running 5-8 miles on the weekdays and running as much as 12 miles every Saturday morning. Last year, she completed the race in four hours and 20 minutes. Ellison’s family, from Western Massachusetts and Maine, will join the BWH doctors and nurses who will be cheering her and the other members of Team Brigham on as they cross the finish line on Monday, April 16.
