Even though the site of their first date—Custy’s in Sudbury—is no longer standing, Tony and Paula Autori’s 18-year marriage is still going strong. If it weren’t for BWH, Tony and Paula Autori may have never even met. Paula met Tony through mutual friends. “Some of my male work friends on the Brigham softball team happen to be friends with Tony as well,” said Paula, who can still remember what Tony was wearing when she first saw him. Tony, who recently returned to BWH as the executive director of Patient Business Systems after six years at Partners, and Paula, a float pool nurse, have spent the majority of their careers here at BWH and say that they have benefited from what they’ve learned from each other’s jobs. “As a nurse, I am more prepared to answer patient’s financial questions because of what I’ve learned about the business side of health care from Tony,” said Paula, who works one day a week and two 12-hour shifts every other weekend. “I like that she is just an extension away,” said Tony, who asked Paula to marry him on Valentine’s Day 19 years ago. “I asked for her father’s blessing before I popped the question, and I think he approved because I was a Boston College alumnus. Her dad was a huge B.C. fan,” jokes Tony. Since then, Tony and Paula have enjoyed each other and the challenges and rewards of raising their son (age 13) and daughter (age 11). “Our kids consider the hospital to be part of their heritage since Tony and I have worked here for so many years,” said Paula, who along with Tony is approaching 25 years of service at BWH. “I think working for the same institution, which we both love, has only bettered our relationship,” said Paula. Tony adds “when we read health care articles, our backgrounds at the BWH and health care in general add to our debates over various articles in the newspaper.” In the middle of juggling weekday and weekend work schedules, the Autoris do manage to enjoy spending time together with their children. They especially enjoy planning family vacations to various spots in the United States.
