BWH and Mission Hill Main Streets were proud to announce on Tuesday, January 30, that the hospital has become a “Corporate Buddy” to the community program. A $10,000 check was presented from BWH to the program, which will use the funds to promote and revitalize the Mission Hill business district. “This is an extension of all the services that BWH has given the community over the years,” said Boston Mayor Thomas Menino, who attended Tuesday’s announcement and check presentation at BWH. “There are so many people here today who are valuable to the city’s health care and community relations, and who help make Boston a better place.” Said Charlotte Golar Richie, Boston chief of housing and director of neighborhood development, “Today, I for one will not just think of BWH as a premier health care institution, which helped me bring my own children into this world; but I’ll think of BWH as a friendly, supportive, generous partner in helping this community.” BWH president Jeffrey Otten discussed the importance of integrating the community into the care BWH provides, making employment opportunities available for local residents while giving all BWH patients culturally-competent care. “Mission Hill is very important to our future,” said Otten. “We have to focus on education and continue to develop these kinds of community partnerships.” John McGonagle, director, Ambulatoryand Community Health Services, has been an integral part of the relationship between Mission Hill Main Streets and BWH. “I’m delighted that BWH is making this long-term investment in the community,” said McGonagle, a Main Streets board member and avid supporter since the program’s inception. “Everyone involved in this collaboration will benefit a great deal from it.”
