The Department of Pathology at BWH and DFCI recently received the Final Lab Survey Report and accreditation letter from the Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) confirming a perfect score of 100 as a result of a survey conducted in the beginning of February. Given the score, JCAHO bestowed a two-year accreditation to the Department of Pathology laboratories until its next survey in early 2005.
“This department is dedicated to the highest quality clinical care for each and every one of our patients,” said Michael Gimbrone, MD, chairman, Department of Pathology, BWH. “More than 400 staff devote their efforts to this task, daily.”
"The preparation and the performance during the survey was a collaborative endeavor on the part of many departments at BWH including Nursing and many of the ambulatory practices,” said John F. McCabe, Jr., MT(ASCP), administrative director of Clinical Laboratories Division, BWH and DFCI.
“We are extremely pleased with this perfect score and are committed to continue to provide the best quality of service,” said Milenko Tanasijevic, MD, director, Clinical Laboratories Division, BWH and DFCI.
BWH has a total of 34 CLIA-licensed lab sites. CLIA refers to the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Act of 1988, which regulates all clinical laboratory services in the nation. Thirty of the BWH sites were surveyed directly by the JCAHO surveyor from February 5 to 14.
