Vivek Murthy
Vivek Murthy, MD, MBA, a hospitalist at BWH and BWFH, has been nominated by President Barack Obama to become the nation's 19th surgeon general.
President Obama announced his intention to name Murthy to the position earlier this month in a White House statement. If approved by the U.S. Senate, he will be the leading spokesperson on all matters of public health in the federal government and will head the U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps. This highly visible role offers the chance for a clear and authoritative national voice to communicate what it takes to be healthy, stay healthy and to care for others in our communities big and small.
"Dr. Murthy is an extremely accomplished physician who has gained the respect and trust of his patients by providing compassionate, high-quality care," said BWH President Betsy Nabel, MD. "I can't think of a better fit for the expertise, charisma, dedication and passion that describe the ideal version of ‘America's Doctor.'"
In 2009, Murthy founded Doctors for America, in which 16,000 physicians and medical students from across the country work together to bring better health care to communities. He also co-founded VISIONS Worldwide, a nonprofit focused on HIV/AIDS education in India and the U.S.
A testament to his innovative and collaborative nature, Murthy also established the social networking site Epernicus, which connects researchers across a variety of areas of expertise, and the technology company, TrialNetworks, which uses a cloud-based platform to enhance recruitment and retention in clinical studies. He received his undergraduate degree from Harvard College, and earned his MD and MBA from Yale University. Murthy completed his residency in internal medicine at BWH in 2006.
"Dr. Murthy will be an exceptional surgeon general," added Nabel. "Passion for others has been the common thread underlying his endeavors to connect at all levels with people to better their worlds through optimal health. I am confident that he will embrace fully, enthusiastically and boldly, the responsibility of serving as America's Doctor, and we will be a stronger and healthier nation for it."
