From top: Jill Goldstein and Reisa Sperling present keynote addresses at the CFDD's Women in Medicine and Science Symposium.
An afternoon BluePrint-themed symposium on Sept. 30, sponsored and hosted by the Center for Faculty Development & Diversity (CFDD), marked the end of a series of BWH celebrations honoring Women in Medicine and Science Month. Female researchers and physicians with expertise ranging from surgery and rheumatology to cardiology, psychiatry and women's health, presented their exciting work to colleagues and guests in Bornstein Amphitheater.
Neurology Chair Martin Samuels, MD, later introduced the symposium's keynote speakers: BWH neurologist Reisa Sperling, MD, director of the Center for Alzheimer Research and Treatment, and Jill Goldstein, PhD, MPH, director of Research for the Connors Center for Women's Health & Gender Biology. New collaborators on a study concerning sex differences in the risk for Alzheimer's disease, Sperling and Goldstein shared some highlights of their collaboration and research programs. Sperling spoke about the promise of detecting Alzheimer's pathology in the brain decades before symptoms arise, while Goldstein offered insights about how an understanding of sex differences in brain development and aging throughout the lifespan may provide novel clues for early detection of Alzheimer's disease.
