A look into the hospital's publication archives revealed that BWH Bulletin is celebrating a birthday milestone this year: 70 years young!
With a steadfast mission of sharing stories "for and about the people of Brigham and Women's Hospital," Bulletin got its start in July 1943 as a way to keep staff and employees of the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital who were serving in World War II informed about hospital happenings back home.
"Hail Brighamites... at home and abroad!" reads the first page of the inaugural issue. "A new voice greets you! Moving with the times, the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital is making a ‘delivery' this week, an important event-the launching of one robust, howling infant, the ‘Brigham Bulletin.' This is the Hospital's way of saying ‘hello' to a lot of its members serving with the Armed Forces and keeping them acquainted with what's what and who's who in the months to come."
The announcement goes on to detail a flexible publication cycle: "We have made no commitments as to how often we will go to press. Whenever we have enough news, we will pass it along. We are depending on each and every one of you for news-for any items of interest you may dig up. We hope you get as much fun out of reading the Brigham Bulletin as we do in sending it to you."
Today, Bulletin remains committed to sharing stories and news every week about the 16,000 BWHers, or "Brighamites," that make BWH the remarkable place it is. Our communications vehicles have certainly grown since 1943-there's the online edition of the print Bulletin, a weekly online photo gallery called "The Week in Photos," Awards & Honors, and news and announcements on PikeNotes, to name a few. But one thing's for sure: we still depend on each and every one of you for news!
