Harpreet Sood and Farrah Jamal Ladha are this year's Deland Fellows.
Despite diverse interests and backgrounds, the paths of Harpreet Sood, MD, MPH, and Farrah Jamal Ladha, MA, MBA, have led them to the same distinguished place this year-the opportunity to serve as BWH's new Deland Fellows.
"I grew up in a family of business, where dinner table discussions revolved around finance and management, and I became the first physician in the family," said Sood, who practiced Internal Medicine and Cardiology at Homerton University Hospital and Whipps Cross University Hospital in London. "For a while, I've known that combining business with my medical career was the path I wanted to take."
Ladha had worked in consulting but decided to switch gears to be part of a sector dedicated to helping people. She transitioned to the role of business manager for Perioperative Services at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital in Maryland, a position she loved.
"The feeling of helping clinicians with administrative and management tasks so they could focus on caring for their patients was really empowering," she said. "Now, at BWHC, I have the opportunity to gain more awareness and insight into both clinical and non-clinical roles in order to develop a stronger appreciation of what it takes to run a hospital. I'm most excited about learning how decisions are made, and how to engage and motivate employees."
The Deland Fellowship in Health Care and Society honors the memory of former board president F. Stanton Deland Jr., a key figure during the merger of BWH's predecessor hospitals. During the extensive planning period, he inspired all parties to advance a unified objective: to provide premier health care and promote innovation in clinical care, research and education.
The fellowship is a one-year administrative experience at BWH and BWFH that prepares professionals to be leaders of health care institutions. Throughout the fellowship, Sood and Ladha will work with senior leaders at both institutions. Sood's mentors are BWFH Chief Operating Officer Michael Gustafson, MD, MBA, and BWH Vice President of Finance & Real Estate Vincent McDermott, and Ladha's mentor is BWH Senior Vice President of Clinical Services and Vice Chair for Administration and Finance David McCready, MBA, MHA.
Sood received his BS in Health Care Management from Imperial College Business School in London, Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery and MD from Kings College School of Medicine in London, and MPH from Harvard School of Public Health. Ladha received her BA in Economics and BBA from the University of Texas, MA in Political Science from American University and MBA from Harvard University.
