This year's Champions in Health Care winners are (from left) Betsy Nabel, MD, Manuel Guillermo Herrera-Acena, MD, Omid Farokhzad, MD, and the Division of Sleep Medicine's Charles Czeisler, MD, PhD, Susan Redline, MD, and Stuart Quan, MD.
The Boston Business Journal (BBJ) recently announced its list of leading professionals in Massachusetts' stellar health care industry. Among them are three BWH individuals and one BWH division.
The awardees are BWH President Betsy Nabel, MD, who topped the administrator category; physician Manuel Guillermo Herrera-Acena, MD, who won the lifetime achievement award; researcher Omid Farokhzad, MD, who was named top innovator; and the Division of Sleep Medicine, which received the award for best physician practice group. The awards were announced in the Aug. 16 print edition of the BBJ.
Nabel was recognized for changing the way health care organizations do business.
"Dr. Nabel has defined a new model of medicine aimed at achieving greater health equity, quality and value by expanding population-based care, reducing costs and fostering innovation in translational research," her nominators wrote.
Through her efforts, BWH has emerged as a model for academic medical centers across the country, according to the BBJ.
Herrera-Acena, founder of BWH's Spanish Clinic, won the lifetime achievement award for making an indelible contribution to health care in Massachusetts.
Herrera-Acena has dedicated his life to making it easier for the Latino community to get access to quality medical care in Boston and around the world. In 1971, he founded the Spanish Clinic, which helps Latino patients overcome many of the social, cultural and linguistic barriers they face accessing care. Today, the clinic is thriving and serves nearly 3,000 patients.
Farokhzad, director of the Laboratory of Nanomedicine and Biomaterials, was recognized for helping to redefine the health care field with pioneering research and procedures. In the past decade, Farokhzad has developed targeted nanoparticles with the potential to treat a wide range of health issues, from tumors to cardiovascular conditions.
The BBJ also recognized the Division of Sleep Medicine for being pioneers in the practice of medicine.
Since the division's creation in 2001, physicians in Sleep Medicine have made advances concerning sleep-wake cycles, understanding how to use light to reset the body clock and discovery of a light-detection system that synchronizes the body clock with day and night.
