The BWH Cafe now offers new entree options that provide staff and visitors with a healthy choice for lunch and dinner. Not only are these dishes nutritious, but they are also palate-pleasing with flavorful herbs and spices.
“Eating healthy away from home can be a challenge,” said Kathy McManus, MS, RD, Nutrition director. “These new entree options will build on the BWH commitment to provide healthy foods for staff and visitors.”
This initiative is part of Your Choice, Your Health, a healthy eating program at BWH, which kicked off last year with a color-coded labeling system on foods and beverages, designed to inform patrons of the nutritional value of their selections.
The latest change to the menu gives Cafe patrons more fish and vegetarian options for lunch and dinner. Two entree choices will be available during both meals, and one will meet the criteria of a “green” or “yellow” option for healthy eating, as outlined by Your Choice, Your Health. Other parts of the Cafe menu remain unchanged.
In addition, a bulletin board will provide nutritional information about these healthy dishes, including recommended portion size, calorie count and other details.
“The team developing the recipes has put a lot of effort into creating dishes that are good for you and full of flavor,” said Julie Elder, RD, manager in the Department of Food Service.
Some of the new dishes include turkey meatloaf with caramelized onion gravy, roasted scrod with red pepper relish, spiced turkey kabobs and oven-baked Mediterranean scrod. More menu items will be rolled out in the coming weeks.
