BWH patient Brett Louis poses with his care team on Tower 3D.
Last month, Tower 3D patient Brett Louis marked an important day: his 100th infusion of immunoglobulin (IVIg), an antibody that enables him to walk and maintain his balance.
In 2006, Louis was diagnosed with Stiff Person Syndrome, a rare neurologic and autoimmune disorder that causes stiffness and rigidity in muscles, which can result in muscle spasms and falls. Louis was unable to walk when he first came to BWH.
Now, at 54, with the help of his BWH care team, including rheumatologist Simon Helfgott, MD, neurologist Thomas Cochrane, MD, MBA, and primary nurse Jayne Daly, RN, Louis feels in control of his health and hopeful about his future. He visits the hospital once a month to receive treatment.
"Especially on my worst days, I never thought these infusions would have such a positive impact on my condition and quality of life," said Louis, during his June 6 infusion. "I am so proud to be a patient at BWH and so grateful to my entire care team."
