The BWH Kidney/Pancreas Transplant Program is making it easier for BWH patients to know what to expect when they are listed for an organ transplant and while receiving care pre-and post-transplant surgery.
Last month, the interdisciplinary group hosted "A Transplant COMPASS: Navigating the Process of Organ Transplantation," an educational event open to BWH patients who are in the early stages of evaluation, or who are waiting for a transplant. The program expects to make this an annual event.
In a packed Bornstein Amphitheater, patients, family members and friends heard from Kidney Transplant Surgical and Program Director Stefan Tullius, MD, PhD, Kidney Transplant Medical Director Anil Chandraker, MD, and transplant nephrologist Andrew Siedlecki, MD. They discussed shared decision-making, options for living kidney donation, what to expect in the post-transplant phase of care and other helpful topics.
A multidisciplinary team of BWH transplant nurses and social workers covered how to prepare for a transplant and how family members can support their loved ones throughout the process of transplant evaluation and care.
