Marines Santos receives an award at this year's ESA, MA, PCA Recognition Celebration.
Patient care assistant Marines Santos does not consider herself a "super PCA," but a PCA who loves her job.
"Equipped with a 5-foot smile, Marines exudes kindness and compassion to every patient she encounters," said staff nurse Shirley Mahoney, RN, of the Float Pool.
Santos recently received an award during the Department of Nursing and Patient Care Services' Emergency Services Assistant, Medical Assistant and Patient Care Assistant Recognition Celebration, held June 25 in the Shapiro Breakout Room.
"It's the way Marines greets patients, the way she engages them in conversation when possible and the way she treats everyone with tenderness and compassion," said Loreto Ruiz, a unit coordinator for the Float Pool, who nominated Santos for the award.
During the ceremony, leaders recognized the 11 PCAs, ESAs and MAs who were nominated, including honorees Pamela Dennison, lead medical assistant for the Center for Infertility and Reproduction Surgery, and Mittie Farmer, lead medical assistant for Radiation Oncology.
In her nomination letter, Dennison's colleagues detailed how "she goes out of her way to make each and every patient feel personally known and deeply cared for by our practice. She sees the bigger picture of patients' needs and works to provide the best care in every capacity."
Cathy Lew, RN, of Radiation Oncology, said of Farmer: "Everyone knows to find Mittie when they need to get the job done, dry a tear, receive a hug or celebrate a special event in their lives, from a good checkup to new kids or grandkids."
