With its many academic institutions and business start-ups, Greater Boston is a hub for innovation. And medicine is a leader in this arena.
To celebrate the clinical innovations flourishing right here at BWH, the hospital is holding its first annual Clinical Innovation Day on June 18. This half-day BluePrint celebration, which will be held 12:30-6:30 p.m., will bring together physicians, scientists, nurses, residents, trainees, administrative staff and other members of the BWH community to celebrate innovations in process improvement, care redesign, health IT and more.
"Clinicians are increasingly being asked to design innovative programs to solve problems associated with caring for populations of complex patients, addressing cost pressures and standardizing the high-quality care we deliver," said Lesley Solomon, director of Strategy and Innovation at BWH's Biomedical Research Institute. "Clinical Innovation Day provides innovators with a platform to share their experiences and achievements and challenge one another to consider what might be possible."
In addition to the various talks and workshops that will be held in the Bornstein Amphitheater and Carrie Hall throughout the afternoon, BWHers will have the opportunity to pitch their own innovative ideas during special one-on-one sessions with members of the Partners Innovation Fund, which was established to fund early-stage technology geared toward improving patient care. The event will conclude with a keynote address by Rodrigo Martinez, life sciences chief strategist for IDEO, a San Francisco-based design firm that takes a human-centered, design-based approach to helping organizations innovate and grow.
"BWH Clinical Innovation Day gives us the opportunity to showcase BWH as a world leader in clinical innovation across many disciplines, from information technology to drug and medical device development," said Barbara Bierer, MD, BWH senior vice president of Research. "We have talented faculty and staff who possess ingenuity and creativity that will help us improve how we deliver care and treatment, not only to our own patients, but for patients across the U.S. and the globe."
