To mark the end of Nurse Recognition Month, BWH Bulletin shares this photograph of nurse Alma Carol Sampson (at right) receiving her official graduation pin from Marion Metcalf, director of the Peter Bent Brigham School of Nursing, during the annual Nursing graduation exercises in 1975.
Upon graduating, nurses traded in their gray student uniforms for a "sparkling white uniform," as described in a 1976 issue of Brigham Bulletin. The pin itself, which was worn as a badge of honor, was designed by jewelry company Tiffany & Co. in 1913. Its design remained unchanged up through the school's closing in 1985. "The ceremony marked the end of three years [of] intensive study and hard work," according to BWH Bulletin's predecessor employee publication. Like BWH's Essence of Nursing recognition dinner, the Nursing celebration of years past was an established tradition that included speeches, awards and a celebratory meal.
