At the May 10 inaugural Estrellita and Yousuf Karsh Visiting Professorship in Women’s Health Symposium, the five professors holding endowed chairs in women’s health in the U.S. and Canada convened at BWH for the first time.
A longtime supporter of BWH and widow of famous portrait photographer Yousuf Karsh, Estrellita Karsh established the professorship in 2010. “Through her generous donations of art, she has helped to ease the pain and suffering of patients and families, and has made the lives of all who work at BWH just that much better,” said Paula Johnson, MD, MPH, chief of the Division of Women’s Health, who hosted the event. “It was her inspired idea to bring together all five professors with endowed chairs in women’s health for this symposium.”
The professors are BWH’s own JoAnn Manson, MD, DrPH, chief of the Division of Preventive Medicine and the Michael and Lee Bell Professor of Women’s Health at Harvard Medical School; C. Noel Bairey Merz, MD, of Cedar-Sinai Medical Center; Rose Fife, MD, MPH, of the Indiana University School of Medicine; Sonia Anand, MD, PhD, of McMaster University in Canada; and Molly Carnes, MD, MS, of the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health. They each briefly shared their research and work—with topics ranging from cardiovascular disease in women to the promotion of gender equity in science, technology, engineering, math and medicine—with faculty and trainees from many departments, who gathered in Bornstein Amphitheater.
“Estrellita, I acknowledge you, thank you and cherish you as a friend and a colleague,” said BWH President Betsy Nabel, MD. “And I commend these five distinguished professors for their unwavering commitment to advancing women’s health practice and research.”
