Every morning, unit coordinator Christina Ocasio walks through the Tower 10BA units, updating patients’ whiteboards with the date and their care providers’ names. But ask patients, and they’ll tell you her impact extends far beyond writing the information they need for the day.
At each patient room, she stops and greets patients with a smile. She asks them about their night, tells them who their care providers will be for the day and reassures them that she is just a call away if they need anything.
She knows the patients so well that she even recognizes which patients prefer the Boston Herald and which like The Boston Globe.
“Her diligent work ethic sets the tone and standard for being compassionate, dependable members of the 10BA support staff team,” according to a nomination letter written by staff nurses Sasha Dubois, RN; Jillian Boyce, RN; and Casey Burnett, RN. “She is the ‘go to’ person for many situations and is always lending a helping hand to her colleagues.”
For her commitment to excellence, Ocasio was honored with this year’s 2013 Administrative Support for Patient Care Areas Award during an April 23 ceremony.
In addition, Patient Care Services celebrated the milestone of 150 unit coordinators achieving certification through the National Association of Health Unit Coordinators.
“What started as a vision has become a reality, thanks to the commitment and desire of our staff to find new and better ways to serve our patients and their colleagues on the units,” said Leo Buckley Jr., executive director of Business Services for Patient Care Services.
Also honored during the ceremony were all the nominees for the award: Liljana Zheku, Maura Byron, Tristan Lowe, Cecelia Earle, Billy Matos, Richard Ernest, Charles McCann, Joaquim Goncalves, Patricia Monahan, Marvin Gonzalez, James Peterson, Olga Ledet, Janet Robichaud, Annette Lewis, Noreen Schneider and Laphen Walrond.
