Operation Walk Boston’s upcoming sixth mission to the Dominican Republic will be its biggest yet. The team will have more volunteers and perform more knee and hip replacement operations than during previous trips to Santo Domingo.
The group departs April 10, with 59 volunteers from BWH, Mass. General Hospital and New England Baptist Hospital prepared to operate on 45 patients who cannot afford or do not have access to surgery. This year’s team includes 38 BWHers—physicians, nurses, physical therapists, a senior pharmacist and others.
“Throughout the week, we’re performing about 68 hip and knee joint replacements in total,” said Roya Ghazinouri, MS, PT, DPT, chief operating officer for the group and manager for SCAMPS (Standardized Clinical Assessment and Management Plans) at BWH.
Led by BWH Chair of Orthopedics Thomas Thornhill, MD, Operation Walk Boston has operated on 200 patients since being established in 2007. The team has also formed strong relationships with the staff at Hospital Plaza de La Salud in Santo Domingo.
“Because we’ve been going to the same place for years, relationships have formed, and practice and standards of care are able to be sustained,” Ghazinouri said.
