The social work practice extends to all corners of BWH and its distributed campus. Complementing the care of interdisciplinary staff, social workers at BWH offer crisis intervention, counseling, guidance and support to patients and families. They work with patients and families to meet their medically related social and emotional needs, as they manage their diagnosis, treatment and recovery. The role of social workers includes psychosocial assessments, crisis intervention, consultation, counseling, advocacy, support groups, teaching and research.
March is National Professional Social Work Month, and social workers around the country are being recognized for the essential clinical role they play in helping patients and families use their strengths, resilience and self-advocacy to navigate life challenges.
To mark the celebration, the BWH Social Work Department hosted several events, including this week's BWH-DFCI Social Work Grand Rounds, where keynote speaker Peggy O'Neill, PhD, LCSW-R, presented "Resilience: Expanding the Light Shining Through the Cracks."
