As part of BWH’s BluePrint celebration, BWH Bulletin will feature this special section to explore the past, present and future of the institution. Throughout 2013, you’ll find a new fun fact, story, photo or tradition in each issue of Bulletin.
As an innovative, thriving academic medical center, BWH is a place of many firsts and milestones. But what about BWH’s earliest days, long before the institution had grown to be the clinical and research powerhouse that it is today?
The first Peter Bent Brigham Hospital Annual Report, published in 1915 and covering the years 1913-1914, tells us that the hospital’s first patient was a surgical case who was admitted on Jan. 27, 1913. The first operation was performed on this patient the following day, and the first medical patient was admitted on March 31, 1913. At the time, only the main floor of Ward A in the single-building hospital (today's 15 Francis St. building) was open to patients; the ground floor was filled with offices and the second floor was where staff lived and ate.
Today, the 15 Francis St. building is home to Carrie Hall, clinical areas, including Thoracic Surgery, administrative and executive offices, a display honoring the legacy of Joseph E. Murray, MD, and much more. The Thea and James M. Stoneman Centennial Park will be completed in 2014, restoring the entrance of the historic Peter Bent Brigham Hospital to its original appearance and bringing beautiful green space to bustling Brigham Circle.
