Starting this month, the BWH Medical Library offers four new courses to help all hospital employees take advantage of the library’s resources, many of which are available right from your desktop.
“These classes teach basic database searching skills that enable users to produce more efficient and complete searches,” said Medical Library Director Anne Fladger.
Classes are monthly and are limited in size so participants can benefit from small group teaching. Departments, units and research teams also can make arrangements through the library for classes tailored to meet their specific needs.
One class, an introduction to the Medical Library website, teaches participants to navigate databases, journals, electronic books and more. Another class will teach search skills for those conducting research in nursing, physical therapy, occupational therapy and social work. The library also will hold a class on RefWorks, an online tool that organizes references and formats bibliographies and papers.
These classes are among many services the Medical Library offers. In the past year, the library has introduced several new resources, including TDNet, a tool that locates electronic journals and books efficiently and links to full text articles in databases such as PubMed, OVID and CINAHL. Another useful tool is Primal Pictures, a 3-D interactive anatomy software. In addition, the library is in the process of purchasing the complete online archives of the New England Journal of Medicine, from 1812 through 2010.
“We have made tremendous strides to provide staff with the latest tools and technologies to help them locate resources for patient care, teaching and research,” said Fladger.
