The BWH Wound Care Center opened last month to offer patients a centralized location for wound care from a multidisciplinary team of doctors, physician assistants, nurses and specialists. The center shares space with the BWH Ambulatory Treatment Room on the lower level of the Pike’s mid-Campus.
“This team of experts provides compassionate and comprehensive care for the full spectrum of typical and atypical wounds,” said Dennis Orgill, MD, PhD, associate chief of Plastic Surgery and medical director of the Wound Care Center and the Ambulatory Treatment Room.
The center provides a designated space where patients can be treated for surgical and non-surgical wounds, including diabetic foot wounds, venous stasis ulcerations, pressure sores and traumatic wounds. The exam rooms are equipped with height adjustable exam tables, lifts and other equipment to make it handicap accessible.
“Previously, wound care services took place at an array of locations across the hospital, making it inefficient to coordinate services,” said Joanna Woodman, RN, CWOCN, a member of the wound care team. “Having one centralized wound care center will afford physicians and visiting nurses a centralized referral location.”
The team in the Wound Care Center features experts in plastic surgery, vascular surgery, orthopedics, dermatology and podiatry, said Clinical Director of the Wound Care Center Laurie Bayer, PA-C. “We also have access to specialists in diabetes medicine, infectious disease, nutrition and pain management,” she said.
With the opening of the center, Orgill also plans to expand wound care research. “Our research is instrumental to providing the most advanced wound care possible for our patients,” he said.
