Nearly 400 people packed The Joseph B. Martin Conference Center at HMS last week for a sneak peek of the upcoming HBO documentary film, “The Alzheimer’s Project,” featuring Dennis Selkoe, MD, co-director of BWH’s Center for Neurologic Diseases, and Reisa Sperling, MD, director of Clinical Research in the Memory Disorders Unit.
The documentary, which airs for three nights on HBO beginning May 10, explains causes, symptoms, treatment and possible cures for Alzheimer’s disease, an irreversible and progressive brain disorder that slowly destroys memory and thinking skills.
“The Alzheimer’s Project” is a four-part series that examines groundbreaking discoveries made by the country’s leading scientists and the effects of this debilitating and fatal disease on both patients and their families. Selkoe and Sperling appear in part three, ‘Momentum in Science.’
In addition to the screening, the event featured a panel discussion that included Selkoe and Sperling moderated by James Wessler, president and CEO of the Alzheimer’s Association, MA/NH Chapter.
This documentary is among several initiatives HBO and the National Institute on Aging at the National Institutes of Health have in store this year. In addition, the network expects to release 15 short supplemental films, a companion book, an advocacy Web site and a nationwide community-based outreach campaign.
