‘Healers of Our Age” portraits, the unique collection of 20 medical and scientific luminaries by renowned photographer Yousuf Karsh, presented to BWH by long-time patrons Yousuf and Estrellita Karsh, has returned to its familiar place on the Nesson Pike.
After a summer of reframing, conservation and improved lighting that ensures the photographs will be enjoyed by future generations, the collection was dedicated to Chief Medical Officer Andy Whittemore, MD.
In a touching ceremony, BWH President Gary Gottlieb, MD, MBA, paid tribute to Whittemore’s leadership qualities before an audience of physicians, family and friends.
“Andy is among the institution’s greatest leaders: a man of unequalled integrity, a surgeon of incalculable skill and a generous and generative teacher and physician,” said Gottlieb, who was introduced by Marshall Wolf, MD. “His contributions have helped to distinguish the Brigham among its peers in all aspects of our mission.”
Estrellita Karsh placed Whittemore, who was Yousuf Karsh’s physician and their mutual friend, in the tradition of great physicians in the history of BWH.
“It seemed at once on meeting Andy that here was a healer not only of great intuition but with compassionate intelligence of the heart,” she said. “What better way to recognize his accomplishments than to include him in this special gallery that never closes.”
“This is a great honor,” Whittemore said. “But I have to say, my career has been built on the shoulders of many of my friends, colleagues and mentors with an incredibly supportive family.”
Local photographer Michael Casey took the portrait of Whittemore in surgical scrubs in a state-of-the-art operating room in the Shapiro Center. It now hangs near the dedication plaque, among other BWH healers including Dr. John Merrill and Dr. Francis Moore.
