The American Cancer Society last month opened the AstraZeneca Hope Lodge Center in Boston, which annually will provide temporary housing to hundreds of cancer outpatients and family members who must travel far from home to Boston for medical treatment.
BWH and Massachusetts General Hospital each gave $2 million, and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute gave $2.5 million to enable the American Cancer Society to purchase the site overlooking a scenic portion of the Emerald Necklace along the Jamaicaway. AstraZeneca donated the $7 million naming gift to the lodge.
“This new facility is the realization of a dream,” said Don Gudaitis, CEO of the New England Division of the American Cancer Society. “The AstraZeneca Hope Lodge Center in Boston will give hundreds more cancer patients access to high quality cancer care every year.”
The Hope Lodge boasts 40 spacious private suites, shared cooking and dining facilities, a library, screening room and healing garden. Guests will receive free transportation to and from treatment, counseling and other vital services. The first guests moved into the Hope Lodge Nov. 10.
The lodge is at 125 South Huntington Ave., Jamaica Plain. For information, call 1-800-ACS-2345.
